Antoine Griezmann Will Leave Atletico Madrid Following 5 Seasons

Antoine Griezmann has recently informed his football club, Atletico Madrid, that he will be leaving this summer. Sources have also reported that the player is likely to sign with Barcelona next season less than 12 months after the player turned the club down.

Atletico Madrid decided to release a brief statement on Tuesday morning to reveal that Antoine Griezmann has stated that he will be leaving the club after playing for them for more than five years. This was followed up with a video post on social media that showcased the French forward explaining his decision to leave the club to his supporters.

Antoine Griezmann’s Future

Initial reports of Antoine Griezmann wanting to Atletico Madrid at the end of the season first surfaced in March 2019. He was offered to several of the biggest clubs in Europe, including Barcelona. However, the Catalans were not interested initially in reopening the transfer discussion as he turned the club down last summer.

The World Cup winner in 2018 from France played his entire football career in Spain, arriving at Atletico Madrid in 2014 from Real Sociedad. Paris Saint-Germain is another elite football club that is currently interested in signing the 28-year-old player.

Barcelona was under the impression that a singing deal was in place for Antoine Griezmann before the start of the World Cup. However, the Catalans were caught off guard when Griezmann released a statement before the tournament started in Russia where he commented on his plans with Atletico Madrid.

However, Antoine Griezmann had a change of heart after this occurred, while Barcelona has also decided to change their minds after much debate for a possible signing that first surfaced in March.

Antoine Griezmann’s Records

Antoine Griezmann managed to score 133 goals in a total of 256 matches across all competitions in 5 seasons for Atletico Madrid. This allowed him to be the leading scorer for his team. He managed to score 126 goals in La Liga alone which places him fourth just behind Christiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez, and Lionel Messi.

Griezmann also managed to win three football titles in 5 years with Atletico Madrid, including the 2014 Spanish Super Cup, the 2018 UEFA Super Cup, and the 2017/18 Europa League. He was also the player that unfortunately missed a vital penalty during the UEFA Champions League final in 2016 against Real Madrid in a penalty shootout.

Josep Maria Bartomeu has recently informed reporters that there are absolutely no bad feelings with Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona has since made Antoine Griezmann and Matthijs de Ligt, the Ajax defender, their primary targets during the summer.

The horrible Champions League defeat against Liverpool last week in the semi-finals further enhanced the decision by the club to add fresh legs to an ageing club. Barcelona can attempt to negotiate a deal with the current club but remain reluctant to start talking to anyone about Griezmann until July when the clause of Griezmann drops from $200 million to $120 million.

Pochettino Is Approaching a Crossroads at Tottenham Hotspur

When you listen to the recent comments from Mauricio Pochettino, you will be forgiven for believing that the manager for Tottenham Hotspur is talking himself out of his job.

Let’s take you back to the end of the previous season. When the Tottenham Hotspur manager insisted that his team must take risks and be brave if they wish to be real contenders to claim trophies. This was something that didn’t get anyone’s attention. Tottenham is making no signings during the summer as they were more focused on moving to their brand-new stadium during September. We are currently in March, and the squad is still playing matches at Wembley.

Pochettino’s Cry for Help

Pochettino was repeating his call for a better and bolder approach earlier this season “If we wish to claim titles, we will be required to operate differently because, as it stands. We are operating in the same way as we did five years ago.” We are doing a brilliant job.

However, if we wish to be true contenders, we seriously need to consider operating in a different way going forward.” Once again, Pochettino’s cry for help went unnoticed as Tottenham once again couldn’t sign a player during the transfer window in January.

Fast forward to last week, where Tottenham lost 2-1 against Burnley in a match that managed to end their title dreams. The angry post-match confrontation from Pochettino with Mike Dean as the referee of the game. You’ll quickly realise that his claims are true and Tottenham is still a decade away from being the club that it should be.

Mauricio Pochettino

Pochettino is an intelligent man. He is well aware of the vacancy that is available at Manchester United along with the potential to transfer to Real Madrid during the summer as well. Also, with the uncertainty surrounding Maurizio Sarri, there could be a new opening at Chelsea too towards the end of the 2018/19 season.

So everything that was said by Pochettino could be designed to turn things around for the chairman of Spurs in a bid to get precisely what he needed. Where he can take a squad of players and transform them into winners. The chairman of Tottenham Hotspurs.

Daniel Levy is well aware that he could lose his prestigious manager to wealthier, more prosperous and bigger clubs as it stands, so he should listen to what the Hotspurs manager has to say. However, there’s also the possibility that the manager’s cry for help is not strategic at all. Perhaps he is merely stating the frustrations that might force him to look for a new challenge somewhere else.

Only time will be able to tell, and the much-needed answer is going to occur at the end of the current season, there’s no doubt about that. However, unless something changes at Tottenham, Pochettino is in grave danger to repeat the mistakes that were made by Everton and David Moyes.

Why Manchester City Is Showing Signs of Strain

Less than 30 days ago, Manchester City was enjoying a 2-point lead in the Premier League table over Liverpool and impressed with a phenomenal difference of 15 goals. However, they are now 7 points behind Liverpool who are also level when it comes to goal difference, and Manchester City has also dropped to third position on the table behind Tottenham Hotspur by a point after Boxing Day.

Manchester City suffered a devastating couple of weeks where they managed to lose 3 out of 4 games where they previously remained undefeated. However, what could be the cause in their sudden dip?

Full-back Problems

The two defeats that Manchester City endured over the festive period, including a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester City and a 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace, have both been characterized by awful full-back performances. The Crystal Palace match managed to expose the defence limitations of Kyle Walker at right-back, who enjoyed a spectacular 2017/18 season but suffered a bit after his World Cup participation. He made a handful of mistakes during their victory against Everton but was partially to blame for the Crystal Palace game where they managed to score three goals.

Against Leicester City, Fabian Delph was to blame as he completely lost the equaliser from Marc Albrighton and Hamza Choudhury’s similar run thereafter which indicates that it might have been a tactic deployed by Leicester City to target the inability of Delph at the far post. Delph is actually considered a midfielder who was converted to play as a left-back. Although he is quite comfortable with the position, his body shape is frequently awkward once the ball is located on the opposite flank.

With Benjamin Mendy out of the team, it leaves Oleksandr Zinchenko or Danilo to face Mohamed Salah when Manchester City clashes against Liverpool in a week’s time. Salah usually plays up front during the 2018/19 season, but Klopp tends to go for a 4-3-3 formation where Salah plays wide on the right during important matches. Klopp will definitely utilize his dangerous attacker due to the fact that Manchester City is having problems at the back.

Lack of Pressing

Manchester City has never been able to adept when it comes to defending in deep positions. However, they managed to compensate with defensive work proactively in higher zones. The forward three managed to press aggressively, while the midfielders pressed up onto their opposing numbers, and the defence maintained a high line to ensure the game is played in the opposition’s half.

However, in recent weeks, prior to the sudden dip from Manchester City, it was quite noticeable that the team weren’t engaging their opposition in this manner. This has been highlighted by Mark Thompson in an article when Manchester City was still accumulating wins.

The article highlighted how the opposition was allowed to control the ball forward which made things increasingly more difficult for Fernandinho, the only defensive midfielder for the team.
